All Blackfin processors have an on-chip boot ROM that has the ability to boot from a wide variety of sources. The files it boots are in a special format normally referred to as an LDR. Different versions of Blackfins have different boot modes (commonly shortened as “BMODEs”), so you should consult the datasheet for your variant to see exactly what options are available.

Generically speaking...

MicroMonitor (aka uMon) is a free embedded system boot platform centered around an extensible embedded flash file system called TFS. With TFS intrinsic to the monitor, all data access can be name based instead of address based. Data transfer protocols like XMODEM and TFTP (also in the monitor) can refer to filenames instead of address space. The whole boot-up strategy is driven by the content of one or more files that can be scripts or executable images. The file syste…

Das U-Boot (or just “U-Boot” for short) is an Open Source Firmware project for PowerPC, ARM, MIPS, x86 and Blackfin processors (to name a few!). The main U-Boot project is hosted on denx's website.

The source and documentation on our site is specific to the Blackfin processor. We try to keep things up to date, and periodically submit patches back to the mainline project. If you have questions about the Blackfin port of U-Boot, you can ask on our U-Boot forums.
